ISO 9000 & AS 9100 are standards and guidelines developed as good business practices.  They are not prescriptive in that it does not dictate the level of quality or the practices that your business must use.  ISO or AS certified organizations establish the criteria for quality for their business and invite independent assessors to examine their operation and provide an impartial certification that the business processes in place can meet the guidelines set forth in ISO or AS and the standards set by the organization.  An ISO/AS certification gives preferred supplier status to many organizations because the customer has confidence in the delivery of consistent quality and satisfaction.

A common practice in business today is the reduction of the number of Suppliers that an organization relies upon.  Selection of the Suppliers to retain is normally based on Quality, delivery, price, customer service, and technical resources.  Organizations with an established Quality Management System such as ISO/AS are prepared for Supplier evaluation surveys and visits.  ISO/AS Registration is usually sufficient to verify the quality level of your organization and thus reduces the cost of survey activity for both you and your Customers.

From an operations aspect, ISO/AS provides a structured system that can be the basis for performance and productivity improvements.  It couples formal process definitions with audits of work activities to assure management that the company policies and procedures are being followed.  The ISO/AS standards of Quality Auditing, result-oriented Corrective Action programs, and Process Control result in lower cost production, better on-time delivery, and higher customer service levels.

ISO/AS standards are powerful management tools, which allow you to formulate policy with the security that it will be communicated correctly and implemented effectively.  The standards require active feedback to management through Internal Auditing and Corrective and Preventive Action features that assure compliance to procedures by the operational areas of the organization.
